Education

Education a key to our success for the future. The education budget has been growing but the results are sub par. Since 2002, as a whole the number of high schools that have failed to meet the Michigan Merit Exam standards have increased almost 70%. In 2007, only 51% of students passed the English Language Arts section, just over 45% passed math, and 56% passed science. These numbers are evidence of much needed change for our public education.

Currently, our Michigan colleges are increasing their tuition rates every year making it more difficult for bright young students to gain a degree in higher education. This must stop.

Government Efficiency and Effectiveness

Effective government is critical for success in our state. When the government functions in a timely manner, on a balanced budget, and replaces old technology our everyday lives are much easier and less costly for the taxpayer. In order to accomplish these goals we need to attract more qualified individuals in leadership roles with the resources and authority they need to accomplish these jobs.

State Budget

Our state budget has continuously grown even though our economy and tax base has shrunk. The budget has been raised $4 billion in the last four years which shows there is no fiscal responsibility in Lansing. This has put our state in a severe budget crisis. Both parties in Lansing need to reduce spending. We need to stop unnecessary spending now or the future generations will encounter a tremendous fiscal problem.

State Economy and Taxes

The state’s economy has been in a recession for the last six years. In order to turn the economy around two things must be done. Businesses need a reason to come and stay in Michigan and taxpayers need more disposable income. When less tax burdens are brought upon businesses they are given more opportunity to succeed. When businesses thrive jobs are created, the economy prospers, and unemployment is low. All businesses should have the same opportunity; big businesses should not be favored over small businesses. Lansing should not be picking winners and losers. After all, small businesses provide 70% of all jobs.

The average taxpayer is losing more of their income every year to taxes. When individuals have more disposable income they are able to place their money where it is needed such as: health care costs, home repairs, education for their children, and retirement. Taxes for individuals need to be brought down, especially property taxes. Property taxes are hurting all homeowners in Michigan especially new homeowners who have to pay the “pop up” tax. The “pop up” tax needs to be abolished.

Environmental

We are fortunate to be Michigan residents because we are surrounded by the Great Lakes. As we continue to enjoy and utilize our lakes we must remember the need to keep our lakes clean from pollution and foreign species of fish. Many states are looking towards our Great Lakes because of their water shortages. We must keep the integrity of the Great Lakes if others want to use our water they must move to Michigan.

Constituent Services

When elected I will do everything possible to answer all mail, phone calls, and emails. I care a great deal about all of your questions and concerns, because everyone deserves to know what is happening in Lansing.

Getting Things Done

The answers are simple, but not easy. We need someone in Lansing who does not take the easy way out. I am not working for any particular group, just Michiganders.
